Folk Dance from Estonia


Estonian folk dance "Oige ja vasemba".

1. Make a circle, girls on the boys' right. Join hands in V hold.
2. 16 walking steps to the left starting with left foot. Arms swing in on the first beat of the bar.
3. 16 walking steps to the right starting with left foot. Keep the arms swinging.
4. Girls join hands in the centre and walk 16 steps to the left and then 16 steps back to the right. Boys join hands and walk 16 steps right and then 16 steps left. Do not swing your hands.
5. Girls finish with their partner on their left shoulder. Boys raise their arms in the air, and drop them in front of girls. Walk 16 steps to the left and 16 steps to the right.
6. Let go hands and face your partner. Boys take right hands to their partner, and left hands to the next girl (grand chain) and keep moving counterclockwise round the circle until the 7th girl. Boys turn with their 7th girl half way round so that both are facing in the opposite direction. Do the Grand chain in reverse until you get back to your original partner.
7. Start the dance again.

Traditional dance - Finland

Steps of Letkis (Letkajenkka: You can find the music on youtube)

The people participating in the dance form a line so that everyone holds the person in front of her/him by the waist or shoulders. The steps go as follows (everybody does the same thing)
  1. kick to the left with your left foot & step back to the middle
  2. kick to the left with your left foot & step back to the middle
  3. kick to the right with your right foot & step back to the middle
  4. kick to the right with your right foot & step back to the middle
  5. jump forward with both feet (just a few inches, or the following persons will soon fall behind)
  6. jump backward with both feet
  7. jump forward three times with both feet
  8. (repeat)

UK Country Dance

This dance is called the Cumberland reel and it is a traditional English country dance. Some of our year 6 pupils are performing it.
